Peter Jackson's Hobbit begins production

In a hole, in the ground, lived a Hobbit…

….and so it begins. Principal production has finally begun on Peter Jackson’s epic film with an epic cast. The Hobbit, stars Martin Freeman, Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood and Aidan Turner (Mitchell, Being Human). If that’s not enough to get you psyched up for the proposed December 2012 premiere, also rumored to be added to the cast is David Tennant and Leonard Nimoy.

Unfortunately, the push back in the production schedule for The Hobbit has had a ripple effect on the May 2011 start of the filming for the next set of three Sherlock programs given Martin Freeman’s availability but, both will be well worth the wait.

For those wondering what David Tennant is up to these days, if you’re within range of BBC Two next week, you can see him in the film, United, which is based on the true story of Manchester United’s legendary “Busby Babes”, the youngest side ever to win the Football League, the 1958 Munich Air Crash that claimed eight of the their number and the extraordinary spirit of a city that rebuilt the team in the wake of the disaster.
