Our British mystery cup runneth over with series renewals of ‘Miss Scarlet’ and ‘Professor T’

Lest we continue to fall into the ‘one and done’ trap that many of our favorite British mysteries there is some brilliant news on the horizon for new seasons of Miss Scarlet, Professor T and Beyond Paradise. Given we operate in an arena where series that take a couple of seasons to find their way, news of new seasons of Miss Scarlet (S6) and Professor T (S5) is both brilliant and welcome news at the same time.

Miss Scarlet

As we close the book on series 5 of Miss Scarlet, Masterpiece PBS announced this past week that the period crime drama series, Miss Scarlet has been renewed for a sixth season. Kate Phillips (Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light) will reprise her role as the title character in the new season.

Also joining the cast for Season 6 are Sam Buchanan (My Fault: London) as the new, young Detective George Willows who joins Scotland Yard after rising through the police ranks, and Grace Hogg-Robinson (The Coroner) as Isabel Summers, an ambitious young woman who joins the Clerical Office alongside Ivy.

The synopsis for S6, “As Eliza and Blake’s once-fraught relationship begins to evolve, they find that working together may be a tricky prospect. Meanwhile, newlyweds Ivy and Potts adjust to married life, a new detective settles in at Scotland Yard, and Nash causes chaos, even from across the globe. Joining this season’s adventures in his greatly anticipated return is Moses Valentine, who swoops in to help Eliza and her crew, just when they need him most.

Professor T

Series 5 of Professor T will see the return of the always brilliant Ben Miller as the genius University of Cambridge criminologist with obsessive compulsive disorder and Frances de la Tour (Rising Damp, Vicious) as Adelaide Tempest, Jasper’s somewhat over-bearing mother.

In addition to Miller and de La Tour returning for series 5, Zoe Wanamaker (Harry Potter, Mr Selfridge, Prime Suspect) will join the cast as the Professor’s aunt, Zelda Radclyffe. Juliet Stevenson returns as psychologist Dr Helena Goldberg alongside Barney White (Against the Law), Sunetra Sarker (Playing Nice), and Rhian Blundell (Vampire Academy) who will also be back who as Detective Dan Winters, DCI Maiya Goswami, and Detective Chloe Highsmith respectively.

While series 4 has yet to air on PBS, according to ITV, the six brand new episodes in season 5 will include some unexpected new relationships and more complex crimes for the Professor and police unit to tackle; including a boxing match that takes a bloody turn and a series of inexplicable sudden deaths at an upmarket spa.
