Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently closer to reality
As we reported here several months back, BBC4 has commissioned a pilot for a sitcom based on the late Douglas Adams’ great post-Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy book, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. To quickly refresh your minds about all-things Dirk, the series is based on the original BBC 4 Radio adaptation of Adams’ first book by the same title. Again, how can you go wrong, when the inside jacket cover of the book describes the work as “thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic“.
The pilot (and proposed series) stars Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd from Green Wing in what, I hope, is closer to reality than not. The following trailer was recently released to give Gently fans, worldwide, a glimpse as to what’s on the way. Almost immediately, Douglas Adams fans have lined up on both sides of the fence to offer their opinions, positive or negative, based on the under 2-minute trailer. Let’s hope it leans more towards the Hitchhiker’s Guide transition to television than the dismal Interview with a Vampire which went to the big screen. Fabulous book that didn’t translate well, in my opinion.
For my money, it’s Douglas Adams. It stars Stephen Mangan and Darren Boyd. How can you go wrong?
