‘Inspector Lynley’ getting reboot based on Elizabeth George novels
In a bit of a nod to validate the mindset that there are no new ideas, the brilliant Inspector Lynley Mysteries is getting a reboot courtesy of BritBox. The original series, which premiered in 2001, was close to perfection featuring the aristocratic (as in the 8th Earl of Asherton) Inspector Thomas Lynley (Nathanial Parker) and the down-to-earth Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers (Sharon Small) join forces to investigate a series of murders.
Based on the series of novels by the American writer Elizabeth George, the pilot episode transmitted in 2001 with the series running for six seasons from 2002-2008 and was comprised of 24 episodes on BBC One and PBS.
The new 4-part series, which began filming in Ireland in October, stars Leo Suter (Vikings: Valhalla) and Sofia Barclay (Ted Lasso) as Inspector Lynley and DS Havers.
While I generally am not the biggest fan of reboots or remakes, I am holding out hope that the new series lives up to the original given it’s coming from Playground Entertainment (Wolf Hall, All Creatures Great and Small) and Salt Films while being written by Steve Thompson (Sherlock) with Lynley novelist Elizabeth George serving as Executive Producer.
The series’ strong ensemble supporting cast includes the great Daniel Mays (Ashes to Ashes, Magpie Murders, Moonflower Murders) as DCI Brian Nies, the astute, suspicious Senior Detective at Three Counties Major Incident Team; Niamh Walsh (The English Game) as Helen Clyde, an estate agent and Lynley’s former Oxford classmate (whose romance with Lynley is sparked when their paths fatefully cross on a case); Michael Workeye (My Lady Jane) as tech specialist Tony Bekele; and Joshua Sher (Vera) as forensic scientist Simon St. James.
