Royal Mail set to celebrate ‘Vicar of Dibley’ with set of stamps

While it’s hard to tell just how far down the food chain that ‘snail mail’ has fallen in the age of digital communication be it phone, text or social media, if there is one thing that will renew my interest in the post office as a primary mode of communication is todays release by Royal Mail of their Vicar of Dibley stamp collection.

Following in their earlier footsteps of honoring the likes of Porridge, Dad’s Army, Open All Hours and Blackadder, Royal Mail will celebrate the 1990s British comedy with 12 special first and second-class stamps available beginning today with eight stamps depicting memorable scenes from the sitcom, including a guest appearance by former ballerina Dame Darcey Bussell and four showing scenes from a Dibley parish council meeting.

The Vicar of Dibley starred the comedian Dawn French as the chocolate-craving Reverend Geraldine Granger and ran for three series from 1994 to 2000, followed by four special episodes between 2004 and 2007.

Royal Mail’s director of external affairs and policy, David Gold, said: “The superb writing and the warmth and idiosyncrasies of its characters made The Vicar of Dibley one of the most loved TV comedies of all time. We celebrate the series with new stamps revisiting some of the show’s classic moments.

Now, if we can just convince Royal Mail to create a set of stamps to celebrating the greatness of Fawlty Towers! There’s something about sending a letter with a ‘Farty Towels’ stamp already has me wanting each stamp with the hotel’s jumbled up signage from out front.
