The Real King's Speech – 1939
The Golden Globes have come and gone. The BAFTA’s are but a faint memory. All eyes are now focused on Sunday, 27 February and the Academy Awards. It’s Oscar time. With The King’s Speech, hopefully, set to sweep the top awards including Best Picture, Best Actor (Colin Firth), Best Supporting Actress (Helena Bonham Carter) and Best Supporting Actor (Geoffrey Rush), the BBC Archives has provided us with the real-life King’s Speech moment with King George VI as he addressed the nation in a declaration of war on 3 september, 1939 to mark the beginning of Britain’s involvement in World War II. FYI, the BBC Archive site is very cool and has some of the most amazing historical pieces from, you guessed it, the BBC archives. If you have free time, you should check it out.
