Sherlock 2 set for late 2011/early 2012 premiere

Aside from the Royal wedding and the return of the new season of Doctor Who, the most talked about, highly-anticipated series return has to be the second set of Sherlock programs from the minds of Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat. You may recall the little teaser tweet and accompanying photo from Mr. Moffat last week which simply said, “…it  begins“. Two simple words made an enormous impact around the world. Of course the photo didn’t hurt either to ramp up the anticipation.

Details just revealed by co-creator/writer, Mark Gatiss, has the three proposed episodes as A Scandal in Bohemia, Hound of the Baskervilles and The Final Problem. Gatiss went on to explain that he will adapt ‘Hound’ for television, while co-creator Steven Moffat will write the series premiere. “Steven wanted to do the twisted love story [of ‘A Scandal’] because he likes that,” he said. “I’m doing the gothic horror, and Steve Thompson is doing ‘The Final Problem‘. Originally set to begin filming this month, it was pushed back a bit to allow Martin Freeman to complete filming on Peter Jackon’s, The Hobbit, which had experienced its’ own filming delays earlier this year.

Just returned from a meeting at PBS to discuss the upcoming Fall broadcast schedule along with programs of note in the pipeline coming your way in 2011-2012. Here’s what I know. Besides the above mentioned Sherlock 2 which, again, is set for a late 2011 premiere in the UK and, most likely, a Spring 2012 premiere on PBS in the States, we have the second set of Downton Abbey premiering Sunday, January 8 on PBS after a Fall 2011 premiere in the UK and the second set of Upstairs Downstairs with the same timeline of Fall 2011 on BBC and Winter/Spring 2012 on PBS. Going to be a great 2011-2012 for BBC, PBS and ITV. Hope you can come along for the ride.

Do you know which members of Season 1 cast will return? Graves, Stubbs, etc?

Bill, I just discovered your wonderful blog. Thank you for keeping us up to date on British programs on PBS and elsewhere!

One question: “Masterpiece Mystery” runs from May till October or November, so are you saying that we might not get S2 of “Sherlock” until next May? I notice there’s currently an open slot in October/November after “Inspector Lewis.” Please give us some hope that “Sherlock” could be slotted in there!

      • @Patty: Welcome! Thanks for the kind comments. Hope you stop back by every so often. RE: Masterpiece/Mystery. Here’s what I know so far: Fall will be a combination of new Inspector Lewis programs, Zen (a new contemporary detective series), a possible short series called Case HIstories, followed by a couple of Masterpiece Contemporary series, one called Page Eight (a sort of MI-5 type drama). December and early January will be the first series of Downton Abbey followed by the new season beginning on January 8. At some point, the new season of Upstairs Downstairs will air in the Spring. Unfortunately, S2 of Sherlock will not be until at least April/May 2012 from what I understand. Nothing that KERA or PBS can do about this, sadly. It won’t air in the UK until early 2012, I believe, maybe Fall 2011, but not sure. The filming was originally scheduled for May, but has been pushed back to it going on right now due to the unavailability of Martin Freeman as he was filming The Hobbit, which was pushed back. All to say, KERA and PBS will broadcast S2 of Sherlock as soon as it becomes available in the U.S. Until then, there’s some really good stuff coming up on Masterpiece so hang in there with us….

Thanks for the info, Bill! I’ll definitely be checking Tellyspotting frequently, because it’s got much more thorough information than the websites of PBS or my local PBS affiliate. I’m very much looking forward to “Zen” next month because I like Rufus Sewell.

While you’re waiting check out John Watson’s blog – but be warned there are spoilers for S2 so you may want to leave those entries unread for now!
