Endeavour – A first look at another PBS 'Masterpiece'

At the risk of getting a bit repetitive here, writing about PBS Masterpiece‘s embarrassment of riches seems to be a weekly occurrence these days. Showing no signs of slowing down this summer when most networks are in the state of perpetual re-runs or pointless reality shows, PBS’ Masterpiece Mystery! series will premiere “Endeavour on Sunday, July 1 at 8:00pCT/9:00pET. Long time viewers of Mystery on PBS will remember that the given name of Inspector Morse (John Thaw) was Endeavour.

In conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the initial UK release of the Inspector Morse series, we are now introduced, in brilliant detail, to Constable Endeavour Morse. It tells the early-days back story of everyone’s favorite Oxford University dropout that lands a job in the Oxford police department. Set in 1965 and written by the original Morse author, Colin Dexter, Endeavour stars Shaun Evans as the young ‘Inspector Morse’. Fans of both Inspector Morse and Inspector Lewis mysteries are going to love Endeavour. That said, pay particular attention to the soundtrack, which was created specifically for the series and recorded at the infamous Abbey Road Studios. Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how the original soundtrack was created.

The bad news, unfortunately, is that Sunday’s premiere is also the only episode that currently exists as it was originally commissioned by ITV1. The good news, however, is that four new episodes have been commisioned by ITV with filming expected to start this summer with a targeted 2013 transmission.
