Paying ‘respect’ to Aretha Franklin at Buckingham Palace during the Changing of the Guards

Crowds attending the Changing of the Guards Ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Friday morning were treated to more than the usual ‘respect’ by the troops from the British Army’s Household Division.

As the world paused to pay tribute to the “Queen of Soul”, the guards who protect Buckingham Palace in London were no exception as the Welsh Guard Band, the musical unit of the guard charged with protecting the home of the Queen of England, came together to play (and pay) “Respect” to Aretha Franklin. The noon tribute came on the same day when, 3,000 miles away, Franklin’s funeral was to take place at Greater Grace Temple in Detroit.

The Army in London (@ArmyinLondon) summed it up the morning tribute in a simple tweet.

R.I.P. Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul
