Floppy fishing hat and all, DCI Vera Stanhope set to call it a day after S14

Sadly, there is no joy in Mudville these days as word has come out that series 14 of Vera will be the last as Branda Blethyn has said it’s time to hang up the floppy fishing hat and iconic trench coat. Adapted from crime author Ann Cleeves’ Inspector Stanhope novels, the Northumberland-based detective series has graced the small screen for the better part of 13 years encompassing 13 series and 54 episodes.

DCI Vera Stanhope of the Northumberland & City Police Department will call it a day after the upcoming 14th series concludes making the streets of Northumberland from seascape to cityscape and all points in-between a little unsettled going forward in the near future.

While news of this being the end as we know it of Vera, rumors immediately crashed the Internets of a possible spin-off. Fully recognizing that without Brenda Blethyn, there is no Vera, the talk has centered around the possibility of a prequel which doesn’t seem out of the question as one only has to look to Prime Suspect and Endeavour to understand that this has potential.

If a prequel isn’t in the cards, maybe the recently returned David Leon could lead the cast as DI Joe Ashworth? Only time will tell but, until then, as they say, we’ll always have S14 to look forward to this in early 2025.
