Stephen Fry continues British invasion of American telly
Fresh off his stint as the sole member of the official UK welcoming committee at Heathrow Airport, the brilliant British actor/comedian/writer/game show host Stephen Fry is set to co-star opposite Joel McHale (E’s The Soup) in The Great Indoors, a CBS comedy pilot written by Mike Gibbons (Tosh.O) and directed by Andy Ackerman (Seinfeld). According to Deadline.com, the CBS TV Studios comedy will center on Joel (McHale), an adventure reporter who must adapt to the times when he becomes boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of their magazine.
Fry will play Antonio, world traveler, explorer, adventurer and founder of ‘The Great Outdoors’ magazine. In what might be the biggest stretch pitch to date, those associated with the show are comparing the employee-boss dynamic between Joel and Antonio to that between Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon and Alec Baldwin’s Jack Donaghy on NBC’s 30 Rock. In addition to Fry and McHale, the cast also includes Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Shaun Brown and Christine Ko.
This is not Stephen Fry’s first rodeo when it comes to American television. The Great Indoors will mark his second US television pilot, the first being the somewhat forgettable 2013 CBS comedy, Super Clyde, that also starred Rupert Grint. Fry’s US series credits also include appearances on Fox’s Bones and 24: Live Another Day. And how, you might ask, would the talents of Stephen Fry be utilized in an American sitcom? Let’s hope producers look at one of Fry’s earlier efforts in the brilliant series, Absolute Power.
