The Office UK – Happy 10th!
Somehow, I had the strange feeling as I was beginning to write this that I was starting the lyrics to Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (you know, “It was 20 years ago today that Sgt Pepper taught the band to play…”).
Ok, not quite, but it WAS 10 years ago today that the world (well, the UK, anyway) was introduced to the world of David Brent and the day-to-day lives of the employees in the Slough, Berkshire branch of the Wernham Hogg Paper Company.
Created, written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, The Office, changed the face of British comedy forever. Ok, not nearly as much as The Beatles changed the face of music but, like Monty Python’s Flying Circus did back in 1969, The Office was a significant departure from “traditional” British situation comedy and set the bar a bit higher for those that were to follow. Cheers.
