It’s Christie for Christmas x 7!
Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. Beginning in 2016, we’ll be having a ‘Christie for Christmas’ holiday season for the foreseeable future. Given the audience response following last Christmas’ small screen adaptation of the Agatha Christie classic, And Then There Were None starring Aidan Turner (Being Human, Poldark) and the earlier re-do of Christie’s Tommy and Tuppence detective novels, Partners in Crime starring David Walliams and Jessica Raine, this will be a great match in which viewers will be the immediate beneficiary.
In addition to the previously announced Witness for the Prosecution, the two-part dramatization of the 1925 short story of the same name starring Toby Jones, Andrea Riseborough and Kim Cattrall, there will be 7 (count ’em seven) more reasons to celebrate ‘Christie for Christmas’ over the next four years. BBC1, in partnership with Agatha Christie Ltd will dig deep into the Christie bag of brilliance for additional television adaptations. The first three of seven Christie books to be adapted have been revealed as….
- Ordeal By Innocence, in which a son is posthumously pardoned of murdering his mother – meaning another member of the family must be guilty
- Death Comes As The End, set in Ancient Egypt, in which a young woman suspects her priest father may be tied up in the death of a concubine
- The ABC Murders, about a serial killer working his way through the alphabet in 1930s Britain, tracked by Hercule Poirot
Sarah Phelps, who wrote the television adaptation of And Then There Were None, has also adapted The Witness For The Prosecution for the BBC. Hilary Strong, CEO of Agatha Christie Limited, which looks after the author’s estate, said: “What Sarah Phelps brought to ‘And Then There Were None’ was a new way of interpreting Christie for a modern audience, and Agatha Christie Ltd is thrilled to be bringing this psychologically rich, visceral and contemporary sensibility to more classic Christie titles for a new generation of fans.”
In case you need to know what ‘a new way of interpreting Christie’ means, have a look. Unfortunately, you’re going to have to wait just a bit to open the next installment of ‘Christie for Christmas’ but it will definitely be worth the wait.
