‘The Upstart Crow’ conquers London’s West End

400+ years after his death, Will Shakespeare has, once again, taken London’s West End by storm. This time around, however, it’s the brilliant duo of Ben Elton and David Mitchell that have brought the bard’s struggles to the stage. Mitchell reprised his role from the brilliant sitcom as William Shakespeare in The Upstart Crow last night with a live version in London’s West End.

Remembering Geoffrey Hughes, a.k.a Onslow, on what would have been his 76th birthday!

The man who most knew as Onslow, the slovenly bane of Hyacinth’s existence (except for one special moment on the QE2) in Keeping Up Appearances, would have been 76 on Sunday. Geoffrey Hughes, one of the true British comedy greats, was also known to many over the years for his supporting role as Twiggy in The Royle Family, conman Vernon Scripps in Heartbeat and binman, Eddie Yeats, in Coronation Street during the 1970’s and 80’s. Probably very few knew that Hughes was also the voice of Paul McCartney in the Beatles 1968 film, Yellow Submarine.

Happy 65th, Rowan Atkinson!

Rowan Atkinson, English actor, comedian, and screenwriter turns 65 today. While best known to audiences worldwide for his work on the sitcoms Blackadder and Mr. Bean and, more recently, for his stellar performance in Maigret, I first stumbled upon Atkinson’s brilliant talent in the BBC2 sketch comedy series, Not the Nine O’Clock News.

Happy Thanksgiving from Tellyspotting!

I think, in my head, I have wanted (or, threatened) to do this since we began this little British blog experiment on October 1, 2009. There are so many things to be thankful, not only during Thanksgiving, but every day of every year. For today, however, here are a few additional folks that have not only given me something to write about for the last decade but have given us all endless laughter, tense drama and heart-pounding mysteries for more years than the law should allow.
